Book Illustrated by A. and M. Provensen
Today I have some very special illustrations to share with you from another super talented and prolific husband and wife team — Alice and Martin Provensen. You can ready more about them here.
The illustrations below are from the 1964 book The Lord Jesus. Originally published in 1958 in Paris as part of the Boyer Collection of religious education books it was picked up by Allyn and Bacon in 1964 and rebranded as a workbook, of sorts, for young children in parochial schools. This copy at one time resided at St. Margaret Mary School in Minneapolis and was purchased at a local estate sale. Thank goodness for people who save things!
The mid-century modern illustrations throughout are beautiful, capturing a hazy innocence of the time period. Long before the digital age, these lovely drawings celebrate the imprint, and imperfections, of the hand.
If you hop on over to Etsy, you can browse through many of the Provensen's children's books for sale.
And here you can see the entire book.
